This little book has held up pretty well, considering that Ellington had another 14 years of composing, recording, and performing after it was written in 1959. Lamberts musical judgements are mostly pretty good- he doesnt like any of Ellingtons vocalists, but hes joined in that opinion by many other critics - although Lambert doesnt even exempt Ivie Anderson from his scorn, as most writers do. And theres a touch of annoying moldy fig dislike of modern jazz here, but its not a fatal flaw.

Worth reading, for the Ellington fan.
